Fell Lapland test area Aurora
Aurora will be a test area for automated driving and for Mobility as a Service development projects. The goal is to create an internationally unique, information-based test area and centre of excellence for intelligent traffic automation to Fell Lapland region, and that way gain global leadership in testing automated driving in Arctic conditions.
Globally these test areas designed for ITS application developers are called sandboxes. So it comes naturally that the Arctic test area is be called Snowbox.
Aurora offers the authorities a possibility to advance their objectives in development of robotics and traffic automatisation. For Finland, this brings a new dimension to the development and implementation of Arctic strategy, and for domestic and international testers this provides a ready testing and working platform and various new possibilities for business operations.
Aurora project contains four sub-projects:
- Intelligent traffic automation: two-step testing ecosystem in harsh winter conditions and with various services
- Digital traffic infrastructure: all the information related to road condition, weather conditions and traffic that can be distributed to application developers and to traffic management
- Intelligent route property management: real-time monitoring and controlling of road maintenance
- Mobility as a Service (MaaS): flexible and cost-effective mobility services to tourists and locals, without a need for a private car
In the first phase of the project these sub-projects are launched as separate packages, but in the later phases of the project they will be integrated to form a unified intelligent traffic ecosystem. For example, MaaS services are produced with autonomic vehicles that are operated utilising information related to road, conditions and traffic.
Aurora project package is in planning stage until the end of year 2015. The key actors involved in planning are the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Finnish Transport Agency, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi, the National Land Survey of Finland, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, ITS Finland, HERE, Roadscanners Oy, Lapland Proving Ground Oy and Tunturi-Lapin Kehitys ry (Regional Development Agency for Fell Lapland).
